Simple guide to creating custom flags for Kerbal Space Program
Creating your flag
Open image editing software (Photoshop, GIMP, etc. ). Create new document with 256×160 resolution (8:5 ratio).
Next upload a photo, logo, or whatever else you want to decorate your vessels with.
Then make all of the necessary adjustments to your image. Don’t hesitate to add some text. Remember to leave the transparent background – KSP has a few build-in, including none.
When you’re happy with the results export your flag. Make sure the resolution is 256×160 px and the file type is .png.
Here is my sample flag:
Don’t worry if your flag looks blurry. The flag’s resulution is much less than the resolution of pictures your are used to. However, flags in KSP are relatively small, so they will look just fine on your rocket.
Now you need to move your flag into the flag folder of the game. Assuming you are using the Steam version of KSP, your flags are to be find in
\\steamapps\common\Kerbal Space Program\GameData\Squad\Flags
Now just paste your flag into the folder. Feel free to add as well as delete the flags.
Naming of your file is crucial. The name of the flag file is going to be the label of “agency” in game. My file’s name is JEB.png, therefore the name of the agency – JEB
Placing your flag
After uploading your flag to the directory in the previous section and restarting KSP, your new flag should be available. Choose it form the flag list either in VAB, SPH, or a Flag Pole. You can also change specific flag after placing it on the vehicle.
Now you are able to place Jeb’s head (or whatever you chose) all over the rockets 🙂
