If you have an EAX sound card, you can increase the game sound!
 

EAX is now on the horizon

1 – Use Alchemy like usual with settings buffers 5 and duration 10
 
2 – Write the following in the game console
 
3 – Restart the game. That's it!
 
 
P.S. It also works in Half-Life 2 Update as well as Portal 1-2.
