How to enable motion controls on PlayStation, Switch, Steam Controllers by using the Steam layout configurator.

Instructions for use

These settings are available in Steam. First, view the game in your Library and select Controller Layout. Next, select Browse Configs at the bottom. They will then be found in the Community sidetab.

You can also copy paste one of the links provided (steam:// – into a browser to view it directly in Steam, where you can then decide whether to accept or reject the setting.

This will allow you to use the Steam controller support setting. This setting is turned off by default. You can find it in Steam (main tab) and View (top navigation) – Settings (dropdown menu) – Controllers (side tab) General Controller Settings button – PlayStation/Switch configuration support (tick to indicate which controller type you have).

Note that these settings do not work with the PS5 DualSense adaptive triggers. These triggers require the controller support setting disabled.

Motion Controls on Touch

PlayStation: All controls as normal except for the touchpad. Extra functionality: Touch anywhere you see on the pad and use motion controls. Press the upper pad or lower pad to Dodge, and press the jump button to jump. Click the left-side button when asked to use your touchpad.

Troubleshooting

If you are having trouble with these settings, please refer back to this section. Otherwise, ignore it.

Problem: The adaptive triggers for my PS5 DualSense controller don't work

Solution: DualSense adaptive trigger features cannot be used with Steam's PlayStation Controller configuration setting. You can only choose one.

Problem: This scheme doesn't work as well as the Switch control scheme.

Solution: Unfortunately, the convention of making the yaw angle relative to the ground rather than the controllers orientation isn't easily implemented on PC. It is also different from how it functions within many Switch titles. You may be able, in Steam, to change the controller layout to suit your needs if Switch motion controls are something you prefer. I would appreciate your feedback and may be able, given that the scheme is based on an established one, to provide a scheme that matches your expectations.

Problem: I don’t get how this input scheme works.

Solution: Use the left trigger or touch the pad to move the controller sideways or up or down (yaw) to see in those directions. To avoid rotating out of view, the controller must be moved faster than the camera. The controller doesn't have to point at the screen. Instead, it measures movement from the position it was in when the motion buttons were last activated. However it should be reset between movements.

Problem: I feel exhausted by using these motion controls.

Solution: Add motion controls with the right Joystick.

Holding your arms straight in front and swinging your controller around may aid in rapid motions but can also fatigue a player. Instead, rest you upper arms flat against the seatback or rest your elbows upon handrests. Twist the controller while keeping the controller relatively still. Rely on your lower arms and wrists for motions.

Problem: These motion controls can cause carpal Tunnel syndrome.

Solution: Instead, twist the controller with your wrists and move it around with your arms, reach out and hold it in your hands.

Problem: I feel motion sick due to these controls.

Solution: Adjusting the sensitivity of the Steam controller configuration is a good idea. It can be done in the box located between the controller grips. It might help to get used the controls, but don't play long enough to feel sick.

Problem: Touchpads are uncomfortable to use or make other controls difficult.

Solution: You can use the Left Trigger settings. While most adult controllers have touchpads, the touchpad activation method should work well for most. However, this may not work well for many PlayStation controllers. Multiple functions may be difficult to reach simultaneously.

Problem: The camera is moving in one direction even though I am holding the controller still.

Solution: Some controllers will calibrate the gyroscopic sensor by placing it on a flat horizontal plane for a few seconds. Others may need to calibrate the gyro in steam.

Problem: Camera movements are slow or uneven.

Solution: Some controllers can have poor gyroscopic sensor performance when wireless depending on how their signal is received. You can either increase signal strength by clearing a direct path between the controller and your computer's wireless receiver, OR you can turn the controller on while it is turned off by plugging it into your computer.

Low framerates can also cause this. In that case, the solution is to increase framerates and lower graphics settings. This will make it less likely that any inputs method will work properly in these conditions.

Design considerations:

Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered has Steam Input support. This allows it more easily to interpret inputs from motion controls without having to emulate a joystick or mouse. This allows it the freedom to use motion controls to their full extent without having to deal emulating a mouse or joystick, or confusing prompts.
