In this guide I will show you how you can install reVC to the Steam version of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City!
Information about reVC
As you may know, Take Two took down once again the GitHub Repository, but with Wayback Machine you can easily look it back, and download all the files. I’ll provide every possible link for the Repository itself and for the downloads.
So what is this, and is this worth it to install ? The game got reverse engineered and it runs on a lot of hardware thanks to this. It also got ported to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita and Nintendo Wii U. The authors made a lot of good changes for the game, even fixed some smaller/bigger bugs. This is basically a big patch for the game, that contains some cool stuff (free camera, widescreen support etc.).
If you want to read more about reVC, check out the GitHub Repository – [archive.org] in Wayback Machine!
Installing process
First, you need to download re3 for your operating system. There are 3 options for Windows users, choose which one you want.
Windows D3D9 MSS 32bit – [archive.org]
Windows D3D9 64bit – [archive.org]
Windows OpenGL 64bit – [archive.org]
Linux 64bit – [archive.org]
MacOS 64bit x86-64 – [archive.org]
If you’re on Linux, and you want to run the game trough Steam (and you want Steam to show that you’re playing the game), download one of the Windows ones. You need to do the same things on Linux as on Windows.
When you downloaded the zip, extract it to a folder.
When you open the folder, you’ll see some folders and files. You need to copy these files where your Grand Theft Auto III is installed.
You can easily find it through Steam, by pressing a Right Click on the game in your Library, Manage and Browse local files.
Now you can paste the files. It will ask you to overwrite the files and say yes. In this way, if you launch the game trough Steam, it will only launch the same old exe as before. However, if you remove the stock .exe file, and rename the extracted one to gta3.exe, Steam will launch the reverse engineered/modified one.
Delete the gta-vc.exe from the installation folder, and rename the reVC.exe to gta-vc.exe.
Congrats, you have successfully installed reVC!
What are the noticeable changes ?
If you start the game, you will notice, that in the Options menu you have more settings to adjust.
You also have a debug menu ingame, where you can do other cool stuff (adjust particles, render, enable cheats etc.). You can bring up this menu by pressing CTRL + M.
There are plenty of changes that you can notice, compared to the original one.
